Allerton Depot in pictures

West end of inside the main shed from left to right, Class 86, No 86318, Class 08, No 08923 and Class 47, No 47305 were at the time the depot was carrying out routine maintainance on both diesel and electric locomotives. 25th March 1984.

Not something you would normally see at a BR Depot but ex Edge Hill (8A) ‘Coronation’ Class No 46229, ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ resides inside Allerton Shed on 26th September 1990 with break van and Class 08, No 08415 attached. The ‘Duchess’ was visiting from the NRM to have her main driving wheels reprofiled on the depot’s wheel lathe being one of two locations at that time could accomodate 6’9″ driving wheels.

Another steam locomotive visitor to Allerton was ex BR ‘Standard’ No 70000, ‘Britannia’, to have her wheels profiled. She seen here inside the depot’s wheel lather house on 16th August 1991.

In accompany with three Class 08 shunters, Class 60, No 60057 ‘Adam Smith’ inside the shed awaiting fitters attention with regards to traction motor damage. This locomotive was a common visitor to the area as was reguary seen on the coal trains to and from Liverpool Docks. 16th August 1991.

With the depots wheel lathe house in the background, in Railfreight Distribution livery, Class 90, No 90127 sits outside the shed after being named ‘Allerton T&RS Depot (Quality Assured)’. At that time the depot was looking after various Class 08 shunters and it was not common to see a Class 90 on shed. 10th March 1993.

Taken at the east end of the shed, a group photograph of some of the people involved in the Inter City Special Trains Charters around Merseyside using LMS ‘Ivatt’ No 46441 during the weekend of 18th / 19th March 1995. The locomotive and coach stock was based and maintained at Allerton for around 10 days.

In connection with the Inter City Special Trains charters, the shunt locomotive for the train was RES Class 47, No 47566, seen in the carriage sidings on the south side of the shed. 19th March 1995.

Class 08, No 08920 sits outside the east end of the shed while just peaking out is a interloper, Class 33, No 33030 on a two week visit from the south. 15th August 1998.

At this time, Allerton was also playing host to an allocation of Class 09 shunters were No 09923 was one along with No 09921 which was outside. However, the main attraction is Cass 33, No 33030 in Civil Engineers livery which had arrived to be repainted into EWS colours. 15th August 1998.

The job completed! The excellent finish job carried out by the shed workers of Class 33, No 33030 into EWS livery, seen inside the shed. Note the ‘8J’ head code blind, reference to Allerton’s shed code during the 1960’s. This Class 33 was the only one to be painted into EWS colours and departed the depot to Toton TMD for the open event being held over the bank hoiday weekend. 26th August 1998.

West end of the shed as in June 2020. The shed over roads one to three has now been extended to accommodate the longer three and four coach electric multiple units especially the new CAF Class 331’s.
