LNWR Ditton Junction to Weaver Junction in Pictures

We would welcome further images for this line especially on the southern section towards Weaver Junction.

On the final leg of its journey to Ditton, Freightliner Class 66, No 66543, crosses Widnes Viaduct on 4F81 ex Crewe Basford Hall liner. The area use to be part Widnes Docks along with numerous railway lines but now part of the Stobarts complex. 2nd July 2014.

Taken from Widnes West Bank, a general view of the Britannia Railway bridge and the Silver Jubilee road bridge that crosses the River Mersey to Runcorn. Coming out of the northern portal of the bridge is EWS Class 66, No 66044 with 6M48 Southampton to Halewood empty auto train. 8th May 2012.

A powerful image of BR ‘Princess’ No 46211 ‘Queen Maud’ on the approach to Britannia Bridge with Saturday’s only 09.50hrs Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston train, next stop Runcorn Station. In the background is Widnes Viaduct and ‘Queen Maud’ was normally an Edge Hill MPD based locomotive which is clearly evident with the 8A shedplate on her smokebox. 9th July 1960.

A superb shot taken in early 1968 from the footway which runs alongside the Ethelfleda Bridge showing a mineral train about to cross the Mersey. You get a real sense of how close the line was to the footway.

Looking like either an AL1 (Class 81) or AL5 (Class 85) elelctric locomotive arriving Runcorn Station with a up express to London Euston. Easy 1960’s.

Taken in the early 1960’s and from Runcorn Signal Box, a BR ‘Black 5’ arrives at the station with what appears to be a Class 2 stopper to LIverpool Lime Street Station.

In plain grey livery, a Siemens Desiro Class 350, No 350127 passes Runcorn Signal Box as it arrives at the station with a Central Trains service from Birmingham New Street. 3rd Augusr 2007.

An excellent image provide by the late Michael Mensing of BR ‘Black 5’ No 44712 on 1O63 16.30hrs Liverpool Lime St to Llandudno as it passes under Heath Road bridge, Runcorn on the approach to Halton Junction were the train will take the line to Frodsham Junction. 20th July 1963.

Another excellent image provide by the late Michael Mensing of a new Bristish Railways AM4 emu (unit No 037) approaching Heath Road bridge, Runcorn on (2K73) 16.24hrs Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street train. In the background, you can make out the ‘rainbow bridge’ which is a few yards away from Halton Junction. 20th July 1963.

On the Up Liverpool line and about to cross onto the Up Main line at Weaver Junction, EWS Class 90, No 90028 works 6L48 15.25hrs Garston Car Terminal to Dagenham Reception Sidings empty auto train. 2nd May 2007. Since this image was taken, this section of the Up LIverpool line has now been lifted.
